There has been a steady increase in rank for major city real estate keywords for authority sites such as Trulia and Yahoo Real Estate sections. They are rising rapidly in ranks for <city> real estate keyword. This is clearly an issue of authority links trumping anchor text links in the Google algorithm. At least for now.

Well at least they are honest about it (The choice of the username guilty was commenter’s choice not mine).

All I want to know is if linking to the property lister’s sites does not “help” them, how they believe that linking to sites that own the property advertising rights and actually are relevant to the content on their site “hurts” their ranks.

As with almost any competitive keyword, Trulia is using tactics that certainly qualify as Grey hat at the very least. Google is known to give and take as they see fit, and it remains to be seen how long Trulia will stay in Google’s good graces.
