Cuil (Cuill) search results
Cuil came out recently with some very interesting results. Crashing site servers (probably due to CNN coverage), no long tail search results, and many other weird image/search keyword results probably made this the worst product launch out there.
I, Mert Sahinoglu (I still donot know who that lady is on that search result (I am a guy) as my picture) protest Cuil who claims to have billions of pages indexed for not indexing my PR4 blog, Metroseo
But hey at least they indexed Falcon Living (my real estate site).
OK, why am I doing the one thing I hate-sending links to search engine results pages which are “usually” robots.txt blocked??? Because this awesome machine after 33 million dollars in venture capital, forgot to put a robots.txt. (as of July 28, 2008). Spammers should have a feast. I know why people made such a big deal of this site; but a new search engine would probably need 330 million not 33 to even have a shot at Google (if this is what comes out of 33 million).
Update (Still july 28) Rand Fishkin from SEOMoz just poined out to me the cannonicalization between cuil.com and cuill.com even though cuill.com home page is redirected to cuil.com. As of July 28, 2008 I can do the above search queries with Cuill.com
Update (Aug 4) Cuil realized both errors (hopefully thanks to this blog (which still does not show up in their search engine index for my name) and added a robots.txt as well as fixing the redirect. May be just may be there is a glimmer of hope (but not really). They still do not pay attention.

Allegedly, Cuill is the correct spelling of the Irish word they’re using as a name.
Yes, they picked over Cuil over Cuill because it was easier to remember. The point is, anyone who claims to know so much about search engines and making so many mistakes. It just takes so much more effort than just throwing around a nice search result layout.
Even with the 30+ million dollar VC money, I do not see them keeping up with Google, let alone surpassing them as the main search engine. It is still in it’s infancy stage and has a long way to go, can it really catch up with the mistakes it has already made? There are plenty of pages that should be indexed by Cuil that are no where to be found on there results page, which I can’t stand looking at anyhow.
I just tried inputting into Cuil in a term I frequently use as a test term – plainfield il new homes – and the third of three results include the following hard to pass up offer.
Buy Viagra Online. 10 pills for $28. Buy Viagra – 50mg, 100mg.We Accept Visa and MasterCard.
Me thinks they still have a few bugs to work out.
I guess I am happy that when I searched my company in Cuil that no photos of Michael Bolton or something like that popped up as my logo.
They have a long way to go and maybe they are positioning themselves for a buyout down the road. Who knows, I’ll check on Cuil.com from time to time to see what’s new, till then, I’ll avoid.
